A Day in the Life . . .

Friday at the Library

. . .a day in the life of a children's reference librarian

Chris Bomba, 'Sex Effects: Androids and Lacanian Ethics'

As intelligent machines gain the ability to perceive the environment, seek energy on their own, harm or help humans, and decide on a course of action, the field of ethics will call us and the machines to moral political action. We may begin to address this issue by asking whether or not intelligent machines are sexed. I will claim they are. Joan Copjec insists that, ontologically, there are only two sexes, and psychoanalysis is the only discipline that treats the question rigorously without reducing it to biology. Certainly we cannot reduce a machine to biology. Through a reading of the anime short series Time of Eve, I will interpret Asimov's three laws of robotics alongside Lacan's seminar VII, The Ethics of Psychoanalysis in order to bind together sex, androids, and ethics, thus altering common conceptions of each.

Design Bloggers predict what trends will be hot in 2014

Design bloggers have all been discussing which they believe are going to be hot in 2014, and here's what they have come up with:

Interchangeable Accents; Arianna Varga thinks we'll be seeing a trend towards chameleon decor, instead of just setting on one fixed look. With a neutral base and then use big-impact accents.

The Great Antiphons...

In the Roman Rite the seven days leading up to Christmass Eve are greater ferias. The Office becomes more solemn, the antiphons at Lauds and the Hours are proper, and the Magnificat antiphon at Vespers takes on a fervent character, calling upon Christ with the many titles used of him in Scripture in a great and eager expectation of his coming. These are the beautiful O Antiphons, so-called because of their consistent use of that interjection. In the illustrious Use of Sarum there were eight of these O Antiphons, with the crowning antiphon used at Vespers on 23rd December being O Virgo Virginum, addressed to St Mary, the Mother of God. The significance of these antiphons is treblefold. Liturgically they are linked with the antiphons used at Vespers on Christmass, such as Levate capita vestra, which calls upon the people to lift up their heads as their redemption is at hand. O Virgo Virginum corresponds directly to the antiphon of the third Psalm at Christmass Vespers, Completi sunt dies Mariae, which cements one of the many exegetical connexions between Old Testament prophecy and New Testament fulfilled in the person of Our Lady. The antiphons are sung at a time of evening, the very time that Christ was born in Bethlehem. The seventh antiphon, O Emmanuel, smooths over a significant personal connexion that I established between the Saxon poet Cynewulf and Bilbo's song in the House of Elrond about E rendil the Mariner. The antiphon reads:

O Emmanuel, Rex et Legifer noster, expectatio gentium, et salvator earum: veni ad salvandum nos, Domine Deus noster.

2013 has ended and I haven't published my best ofs yet. I better start now. I have to admit that 2013 year has been rather excellent in terms of my experience with Japanese films considering I saw so many in their year of release, played a small part in helping bring one over to the UK and interviewed a few directors and yet, and yetThere were a few releases that I wish I had seen. Every trailer post always brings up a few titles I wish I could see in a cinema and so here's a list of 14 Japanese films released in 2013 I hope I get to see in 2014!
